Prayer Rug Fragment

3

As evidenced by its clear totemic drawing, clarity of design, and creative use of space, this piece is indisputably one of the two oldest pieces in the exhibition.  The primary motif, which appears often in later Baluch rugs, can be interpreted as either a plant form in a container, or a tree flanked by two outward-facing birds.  This rug offers a reminder that dramatic colors do not necessarily a great rug make.  The power of its graphic forms does it all.
