Balisht Face

7

Obviously great care was taken in the planning of this piece.  The cruciform elements in the field were calculated to fit exactly top and bottom.  The main border, with its white diamond forms carefully centered and its corners concise, is equally precise.  And its colors are especially rich and vibrant.  Unlike nearly all balisht that enter the Western markets, this one had a plainweave back when purchased, but one that was in such poor shape that it had to be removed.  The camel field in this balisht is not camel wool but a soft, glossy, pearly wool (sheep? goat?) that is occasionally seen in symmetrically knotted pieces of this type.  (See plate 22)
