Rug Fragment

14

While the design motif of this very unusual rug is frequently seen in the borders of old (and not so old) “Baluch” carpets, here it has some elements added to dispel the symmetry.  The design is cleverly wrought: notice that while all three columns begin the same at the bottom and end the same at the top, the center column has been changed to break the monotony and introduce a red rosette as a central focal point.  The open design, use of vibrant colors, narrow border, and general feel of the piece combine to suggest that it is very old, though how old remains a mystery.
