Khorjin Face Fragment

16

The main and outer minor borders of this old piece are gone, (see the border of plate 17 for the original appearance), but the loss in no way detracts from the majestic power imparted by the field’s minakhani design.  Notice how the vertical red “vines” meander to create movement, and how the different tilts and slight variations in the white flowers do the same.  Notice the three-dimensional effect that the weaver’s clever use of color and form creates.  This is one of a group of old minakhani-type pieces that are woven with a single weft shoot, an uncommon technique in “Baluch” weavings and one that has yet to be explained.
