Small Rug

One of the noteworthy characteristics of “Baluch” weavers is a propensity for incorporating into their design lexicon motifs borrowed from other weaving groups.  Here the field is dominated by guls of obvious Turkmen origin.  The color palette of this piece is quite surprising, however: although the main border is quite drab, the guls are resplendent with green, rose, sky blue, and rich dark chestnut red.  The kilim ends, although extensively worn, show evidence of highly intricate weft-substitution patterning.
