Yomud Spoonbag Fragment

0' 6" x 0' 7"

This spoonbag, which almost certainly dates from the 18th century and perhaps earlier, has glossy wool and several beautiful and unusual colors including a peacock blue and a purple-tinted red. Even more rarely observed, almost the entire field of the spoonbag is woven in offset knotting. The delicacy of the border and the weaving in the field, together with the weaver’s decision to include only a single column of birds’ heads, combine to create a spaciousness surprising in so small a weaving.
