Turkmen Torba(?)

2' 11" X 0' 7"

21

At first glance this piece looks like a torba that is missing its borders. Closer examination, however, reveals an unbroken single row of ivory knots surrounding the piece on all sides. This suggests that the piece is complete, in a rather peculiar shape and layout. It has something of the Tekke in it with its ivory warps and crisp design, but the knot density is low and warp depression excessive. So, as usual in the face of mystery, are we led to the “middle Amu Darya valley” attribution?
