Shahsavan tribal confederation Northwestern Iran
Pair of Small Bags (khorjin), late 19th century

Together these small khorjin illustrate the variety of materials and weaving techniques used by Shahsavan tribeswomen to create objects of everyday utility. On each face of one pair of bags is a stepped polygon within reciprocal borders, a pattern made by wrapping extra wefts - here wool and ivory silk - around the warps (a process known as sumak) in a way that entirely obscures the underlying foundation. The other pair of bags has a warp-faced ground of ivory cotton, which remains visible between the delicate flowering plants and larger, diamond-shaped medallions in wool sumak. The striped kilim backing that connected the first pair of bags has been rewoven, but the second pair has retained most of its warp-faced connecting strip, including a slit that would have allowed the bags to be placed over the pommel of a saddle. Each pair of bags might have been used to carry its owner's personal belongings, such as money, sewing or writing implements, or tobacco.
