Afshar, Southeastern Iran, Kerman area
BAGFACE, late 19th century

The distinctive repeat field design and extended rectangular shape of this bagface identify it as a product of the Afshar, a large tribal group situated near Kerman in Iran. The intensity and saturation of its vegetable colors attest to a high level of dyeing skill. Many small details, including the lion (an ancient Persian symbol of  bravery and nobility) appearing in green at the lower left corner, the completely illegible Arabic script, and the human figures, add to the appeal of this weaving.
