Central Anatolian Pile Rug 19th
century
This is a rather
classic prayer rug design, although the exuberance of the devices in
the spandrels and the rather bold scale of the border give the piece
a freshness that rote repetitions of classic designs lack. For a
rug that shares the scale of the border and some of the spandrel
devices, see THC1 vol. 1, no. 0081. The presence of field motifs in
this latter rug strengthens the suspicion that the “repairs” easily
visible in the plain red field of the subject piece are actually
places where design elements were removed.
1. THC refers to the 5-volume series titled
Turkish Handwoven Carpets, 1987-1995
