Central Anatolian Pile Rug 19th
century
On the basis of
structure and palette, this rug can be attributed to the Karaman
area. The back shows small areas where the backs of the knots have
been worn thin or through; this effect is also seen on rugs from
Ayranci, a town near Karaman where rugs are often placed on top of
reed mats, which abrade the backs of the rugs. The generous use of
the “stars” – a constellation of 5 knots – that cover the upper half
of this rug is uncommon; they are more frequently used only as a
border element or only in the spandrels of prayer rugs.
