Marasali Pile Rug
ca. 1800

One of the few "curved arch" black Marasalis, which gives it the very early date.  The all-over pattern of rows of boteh facing in alternate directions display colors and drawing variations that enhance the repetitive design. The boteh are enlivened by a flaming outline and the varying sizes recall air bubbles rising in a column of liquid. Kaffel stated (Hali 103, March/April 1999) that he knows of three curved arch black Marasalis where the "grape bunches" are pendant as in this rug. The other two examples cited are the Perez Marasali and the Kallmann Marasali.  This piece has had a very minor amount of restoration since it was last published1, which we believe enhances the visual appeal.
