Baluch
Pile Rug 19th
century
This tiny prayer rug is unusual from
two aspects; first, its diminutive size, and second, its use of only
two narrow minor borders to define the mihrab and hand-panels.
(Normally Baluch prayer rugs employ four to six borders, and
occasionally ten or more, to do so.) The blue field is woven of
soft, shiny wool, and the central tree form is unusually bold and
spacious. Note also the weaver has used white wool nowhere other
than the border. There is no known analog to this rug.
